Sea Moss Storage and Shelf Life: How to Keep It Fresh
Sea moss — whether raw dried, gel form, or capsules — has specific storage requirements that affect potency and safety. Here's exactly what you need to know for each format.
Dried Sea Moss (Raw)
Properly stored dried sea moss has a shelf life of up to 1–2 years. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry location — away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Humidity is the primary enemy of dried sea moss: moisture causes mold growth. A sealed glass jar or vacuum bag in a pantry or cupboard is ideal. Do not refrigerate dry sea moss — the temperature variation and ambient refrigerator humidity can introduce moisture.
Sea Moss Gel (Prepared at Home)
Homemade sea moss gel should be stored in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator. It keeps for 2–4 weeks refrigerated. For longer storage, sea moss gel freezes well — pour into an ice cube tray, freeze, and transfer to a sealed bag. Frozen gel cubes keep for up to 3 months and can be added directly to smoothies from frozen.
Signs that sea moss gel has gone bad: pink or dark discoloration, off smell, visible mold. If in doubt, discard it.
Commercial Sea Moss Gels
Commercial gels (like those at Healthy Herb Store) are sealed and formulated for a longer shelf life. Check the best-by date on the label and refrigerate after opening. Once opened, most commercial sea moss gels should be used within 2–4 weeks.
Sea Moss Capsules
Capsules have the longest and most stable shelf life — typically 2 years from manufacture when stored correctly. Store in a cool, dry location away from sunlight and humidity. A bathroom medicine cabinet is not ideal — the daily heat and humidity from showers degrade supplements faster. A bedroom dresser drawer or kitchen cupboard away from the stove is better.
Our sea moss capsules include a best-by date on every bottle. Our sea moss gels should be refrigerated after opening.
