What "Sea Moss" Usually Refers To in the Caribbean Tradition

In Caribbean wellness culture, "sea moss" most commonly refers to Gracilaria — a genus of red algae widely found in the Caribbean, particularly around Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Trinidad. Gracilaria species are the sea moss traditionally blended into the famous Caribbean sea moss drink.

Gracilaria and Chondrus crispus are both red algae with similar nutritional profiles, but they're distinct species. Gracilaria tends to be thinner, more translucent, and has a lighter color than Chondrus crispus.
