Natural Sea Moss: What "Natural" Actually Means on a Supplement Label
"Natural" is one of the most used — and least regulated — terms in the supplement industry. When you see it on a sea moss product, here's what it does and doesn't mean, and what to look for instead.
What "Natural" Doesn't Mean Legally
The FDA has not established a formal definition for "natural" on food or supplement labels. The FTC has guidance for advertising claims but no strict legal definition. In practice, "natural" on a supplement label means almost nothing without additional qualification. A product made from heavily processed, pool-grown sea moss with added synthetic stabilizers could legally be labeled "natural."
What Actually Matters for Sea Moss Quality
Instead of looking for "natural," look for these specific, verifiable claims:
- Wildcrafted: Harvested from the wild ocean environment, not cultivated. More meaningful than "natural" — though still not regulated, it's harder to falsify because wildcrafted sea moss looks and tests differently from farm-raised.
- Species identified: Chondrus crispus (Irish moss) or Gracilaria — products that identify the species are more transparent than those that simply say "sea moss."
- Harvest location: Atlantic, Caribbean, or Pacific — geographic origin affects mineral profile and regulatory oversight.
- Third-party tested: A Certificate of Analysis from an independent lab confirming identity, mineral content, and absence of heavy metals and contaminants.
- cGMP manufactured: Manufactured under FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practices — a documented quality standard with teeth, unlike "natural."
What Healthy Herb Store Uses
