Bladderwrack Benefits: What This Seaweed Does and Why It's in Our Formula

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a brown seaweed with a long history of use in European coastal herbal medicine — particularly in the British Isles and Scandinavia. It's one of the three botanicals in our Sea Moss, Burdock Root & Bladderwrack capsules. Here's what it brings to the formula.* Informational only — not medical advice.

What Bladderwrack Is

Bladderwrack is a brown algae identifiable by the air-filled pods (bladders) along its fronds that keep it buoyant. It grows on North Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, commonly alongside Irish moss. Like sea moss, it's a rich source of naturally occurring iodine — historically the primary reason it was used medicinally in coastal European communities.*

Key Nutrients and Compounds

  • Iodine: Bladderwrack is one of the most concentrated natural dietary sources of iodine — a mineral essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. Both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions can be influenced by iodine intake, which is why those with thyroid conditions should consult a healthcare provider before use.*
  • Fucoidan: A sulfated polysaccharide unique to brown seaweeds — studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties in laboratory settings.*
  • Alginic acid: A soluble fiber with gut health applications — may support healthy bowel function and act as a prebiotic.*
  • Phlorotannins: Polyphenol antioxidants found in brown algae, studied for their free radical scavenging activity.*

Traditional Use

Bladderwrack was widely used in 19th century European medicine as a thyroid tonic before synthetic thyroid medications existed. It was applied as an iodine source for goiter prevention in iodine-deficient inland populations. In coastal communities it was consumed fresh, dried, or as a tea for general wellness and energy support.*

Why It Pairs With Sea Moss and Burdock Root

Sea moss provides carrageenan, sulfur, and broad mineral density. Burdock root provides prebiotic inulin, antioxidants, and liver support. Bladderwrack adds concentrated iodine, fucoidan, and additional antioxidant compounds — the three together cover thyroid support, gut health, mineral replenishment, and antioxidant activity in a single capsule.*

Our Sea Moss, Burdock Root & Bladderwrack capsules are 900mg per serving, wildcrafted sea moss, made at a cGMP-certified facility.
